DEXA Scan

A Bone Densitometry scan using Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry  (DEXA) is a safe, fast and accurate test to assess a patient’s bone mineral density.

Bone cells are constantly digested and reformed.  This process of bone cell reformation slows down with age, resulting in accelerated bone loss, especially after the age of 35. years.  This is a particular problem for women after monopause.  The loss of bone stock causes the bones to become porous and brittle. This may lead to the  fractures with resultant loss of mobility and independence.

Osteoporosis is one of the most prevalent diseases affecting Australians, particularly in the older age group. It has been estimated that 60% of women and 30% of men over 60 years of age are affected.

At CNM, a qualified technologist will conduct the DEXA examination. The patient will not feel any discomfort  during the examination.

The scan usually takes a couple of minutes to complete.

Even though x-rays are used, the amount absorbed by the patient is only about 10% of that received during a chest x-ray. The x-ray dose from the bone densitometry test is comparable to the naturally occurring radiation individuals are exposed to in one week of living in Sydney.
